Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: Hello World
The world of mobile phones was shaken this past February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona with the announcement of the first ever Playstation phone. Gamers everywhere can rejoice as the new handset is built specifically for those who can’t go a second without some sort of virtual second-life to help stimulate reality. After years (and years) of rumours buzzing about the possible release of a new gaming phone, Sony Ericsson finally showed it off to hundreds of technology lovers in Spain.
The Xperia Play is to run on the Android Gingerbread platform providing access to the thousands of apps available on the Android market, so you can explore the city with 3D maps or download your favourite books to read when your fingers tire of button mashing in games. The Play offers a good sized four inch, 854 x 480 megapixel screen for a clear display, and a super-fast Snap Dragon processor and Adreno 205 graphical processor to compliment the high graphics demanded in many games.
For those worried about a substandard gaming experience due to the traditionally reduced functionality of mobile phone controls, fear not, as there is a slide out game controller complete with dedicated gaming controls and analogue joystick. These give you the ability to play with the best of them on both the pre-loaded games and the extra titles that are to be rolled out over the coming years. Stereo sound is available on the mobile phone, as well as a 3.5 mm audio jack to connect your favourite pair of headphones with.
Gmail pushed straight to your handset, Google Earth and Facebook all come as preloaded apps for the socialiser and businessman alike. And the cherry on top is not just the 5.1 megapixel camera integrated with messaging capabilities, nor the front facing camera designed to allow video chat, but the straight-to-YouTube software that will make uploading your captured memories a breeze for the world to see. It seems that the folks at Sony held nothing back and truly understand the need to share your gaming conquests with those across the mobile internet.
If you want a smartphone that can make calls, get on the internet, social network, multitask, and play your music, take your pick. They are run of the mill. But if you want to turn the world of mobile phones on its head and really experience everything that a smartphone has the potential to offer, Sony Ericsson should be your first stop. From making calls to making headshots, the Xperia Play has it all.

It was legendary homicide detective Lou Smit who finally broke the case, sending Robert Charles Browne, a forty-three-year-old Louisiana drifter and career criminal, to prison for life. But the savage saga of Robert Browne did not end there. In 2000, Smit, now retired, joined forces with Charlie Hess, an ex-FBI agent and former CIA operative, to reexamine the cold-case murder files of the local Sheriff’s Department. With the addition of amateur forensics buff Scott Fischer, the Apple Dumpling Gang was born. As their volunteer work continued, Smit, Hess, and Fischer came upon a taunting letter written by Browne, hinting that the death of Heather Church was only the tip of the iceberg. What other law enforcement officials had simply ignored, the Apple Dumpling Gang took on with single-minded determination. Charlie Hess began a correspondence with Browne in which, over the course of dozens of letters, the killer teasingly spun out the details of a horrific killing spree spread over thirty years and nine states. The tally, according to Browne: forty-nine deaths, making him one of the most prolific serial murderers in the annals of American crime. Hess’s unique insight into criminal psychology, honed over his years developing informants and working as a polygraph operator, made him uniquely suited to match wits with the cagey and canny killer. But Browne was every bit the retired cop’s equal: quickwitted, mercurial, and charismatic, with a penchant for riddles and a lifetime full of grisly secrets. A riveting account of the complex and chilling cat-and-mouse game Hess and Browne played over five years, Hello Charlie details Browne’s bloody swath of murder — by strangulation, poisoning, and dismemberment — even as it explores the special bond forged between the cop and the killer, allowing Hess unprecedented access into the mind of a remorseless psychopath. As compulsively readable as any crime novel, Hello Charlie picks up where The Silence of the Lambs left off, with the incredible true story of one man’s search for justice with a murderer as his guide. |
