Disabled Church – Disabled Society $36.95 'Combining poignant personal honesty with an extraordinarily wide range of theological and philosophical learning, John Gillibrand has written a book that takes us well beyond the usual boundaries of studies in autism to raise questions about our human identity, suggesting that we jeopardize human dignity most when we try to bind it to the characteristics we can recognize and value and understand as mirroring only our own faces.'. – from the Foreword by Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. In this moving and intelligent book John Gillibrand, an Anglican priest, draws on his experience of caring for his non-verbal son, Adam, who has autism and is now a teenager. He reflects on how the experience has changed not just his life, but also his whole way of thinking about theology, politics and philosophy. Illuminated by an account of his day to day experiences with Adam, and deeper reflection upon the meaning of that experience, John Gillibrand considers the challenges that autism – and disability in general – present to the western tradition of thought in theology and philosophy. His experiences lead him to consider the place of people with autism in relation to religion and philosophy, and how the difficulties in providing adequate public services for those with autism and their carers point to a need for radical transformation of western political structures. This thoughtful and incisive book will be of interest to theologians, philosophers and sociologists, as well as to all those trying to integrate people with autism into society. Parents and carers will find much to reflect on. |

How I Became a Human Being: A Disabled Man’s Quest for Independence $29.48 September 1955. Six-year-old Mark O’Brien moved his arms and legs for the last time. He came out of a thirty-day coma to find himself enclosed from the neck down in an iron lung, the machine in which he would live for much of the rest of his life. How I Became a Human Being is Mark O’Brien’s account of his struggles to lead an independent life despite a lifelong disability. In 1955, he contracted polio and became permanently paralyzed from the neck down. O’Brien describes growing up without the use of his limbs, his adolescence struggling with physical rehabilitation and suffering the bureaucracy of hospitals and institutions, and his adult life as an independent student and writer. Despite his weak physical state, O’Brien earned a graduate degree, explored his sexuality, fell in love, published poetry, and worked as a journalist. A determined writer, O’Brien used a mouthstick to type each word. O’Brien’s story does not beg for sympathy. It is rather a day-to-day account of his reality–the life he crafted and maintained with a good mind, hired attendants, decent legislation for disabled people in California, and support from the University of California at Berkeley. He describes the ways in which a paralyzed person takes care of the body, mind, and heart. What mattered most was his writing, the people he loved, his belief in God, and his belief in himself. |

Does a Disabled Child = a Disabled Family? $16.98 Many people attempt to address issues concerning developmentally disabled children and their families from a purely academic viewpoint. Others have very personal experiences with little or no professional or academic background. Both can be beneficial and provide helpful information, but they both also have potential pitfalls and limitations. The purpose here is to use personal experience along with professional and academic information to help professionals, parents, and siblings in their adjustment to their new journey. The goal is to assist families in ways of achieving balance between taking care of the needs of parents to continue to develop themselves, their relationships, their non-disabled children, and the disabled family member. The ideas presented here are not intended to address specific disabilities. They are to provide perspective and some general helpful ideas that can be implemented regardless of the disability of the child. |
