Where and How We Learn   by Tamara Jacobs

This past autumn ‘The Social Network’ was released in cinemas. It told the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the brilliant creator of the world’s largest social platform, Facebook. It covered how Zuckerberg got the initial idea, developed it and then dropped out of Harvard to move to California and take his business to the level it needed to be to get where it is today. There is no doubt that Mark Zuckerberg is an academic genius and certainly a computer genius. Whether he learned these things in school, books or on his own is unclear.

There are tons of stories just like that. What about the one about the boy who grew up in a tiny poor Portuguese village kicking around balls on dirt roads, and then goes on to becoming one of the best football players in the world – I think his name is Christiano Rinaldo, the highest paid football player in the history of the game.

The point is we all learn things in different ways. Some people grow to become famous for what they do and as a result their stories become famous too. But many people have evolved out of nothing into something and few people know about it. Perhaps they grew up with uneducated parents and went on to become very successful businessmen/women. Or maybe they grew up in a home with plastic on the couches and boiled potatoes for dinner, and somehow winded up having a tremendous eye for aesthetics, a green thumb and a knack for gourmet cooking. Where did this talent and interest come from? Books, jealousy of kids at school, television, daydreaming? Who knows.

What we do know is that home, geographical and political environments and school are where it all begins. People learn from example, they learn from experience, but they also learn from encouragement and environment. If they are in a space that stimulates them and around people who push them to learn they are likely to do just that. If however, they are surrounded by people who don’t care about their futures or in a political country where information is bias and censorship is a big problem, it is difficult for them to really learn and challenge themselves.

Some of these issues are impossible to avoid, while others are more controllable. If you are a teacher and you have the potential to really take an interest in your students then do just that, it is the greatest gift you can give a person. If you are a school and you can build facilities and outdoor classrooms that will open up the minds and learning channels of your students then you should do just that, your student body will thank you for it.
